Coin description
The obverse features the official Coat of Arms of Niue at the center, surrounded by chalk-style scientific formulas etched across a schoolboard-inspired background — a nod to the foundations of learning and discovery.
The reverse showcases a detailed portrait of Isaac Newton on the right, with his name and life dates (1643–1727) inscribed at the far edge. On the left side, a falling apple symbolizes the moment that inspired Newton’s thinking about gravity. Surrounding the scene are scientific formulas and diagrams, including the law of universal gravitation, visually illustrating the discovery that changed our understanding of the forces governing the universe.
Background information
Isaac Newton (1643–1727) was one of the most influential scientists in history. The English mathematician and physicist played a central role in the Scientific Revolution and laid the foundations of classical mechanics. His work in mathematics, optics, and astronomy transformed how scientists understand the natural world. Newton’s book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, introduced laws of motion and universal gravitation that would dominate scientific thought for centuries.
Newton’s law of universal gravitation describes how every object in the universe attracts every other object through gravity. The strength of this force depends on the masses of the objects and the distance between them, expressed in the equation F = G (m₁m₂ / r²).
