Coin description
The reverse of the coin depicts Amaterasu, the Goddess of the sun and the universe, together with known characteristics of the Imperial House of Japan and the inscription: “AMATERASU” – the name of the Goddess. In her right hand, she holds the well-known mirror, the Imperial House of Japan’s emblem. The Ise Grand Shrine is in the background which is the main Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu.
The obverse side of the coin depicts the standard Coat of Arms with Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “COOK ISLANDS” (the issuing country), “2021” (the year of issue) and “20 DOLLARS” (the face value).
Background information
Amaterasu is the Goddess of the sun and the universe in Japanese mythology. Translated, her full name ‘Amaterasu-Ōmikami’ means “the great august deity illuminating the heavens” or “heaven-illuminating great deity.” Her major shrine is located the Ise Grand Shrine. She is considered a direct ancestor of the Japanese imperial family. The mirror with which she is often depicted is the Imperial House of Japan’s emblem. Amaterasu is celebrated every July 17 with street processions all over the country.
