Background information
The idea of building a monumental religious statue in Rio de Janeiro emerged in the late 19th century, though the project only gained momentum in the 1920s. Supported by the Catholic Circle of Rio, it symbolized the strength of Christianity in Brazil during a period of modernization and national identity formation. Designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and engineered by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, construction began in 1926. Workers employed reinforced concrete, then a cutting-edge material, and covered the surface with millions of soapstone tiles chosen for durability and luminosity. The statue was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.
Standing 30 meters tall with outstretched arms, Christ the Redeemer quickly became a defining emblem of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil itself. Beyond its religious meaning, it reflects early 20th-century international collaboration, combining European artistic vision with Brazilian engineering. Today, it remains a landmark of cultural identity and historical significance.
