Coin description
The reverse presents Saint James in Ultra High Relief, with a finely modelled beard, flowing hair and deeply folded garments. Scallop shell motifs adorn his pilgrim’s hat and cloak. He carries a book beneath one arm and holds a tall staff with a hanging gourd, completing his traditional pilgrim’s attributes. The shell’s curved outline frames the figure, while the antique finish enhances its sculptural detail. To the left are the inscriptions “Niue Island”, “5 dollars” and “2 oz .999 Fine Silver”. The Public Seal of Niue and the year “2026” appear to the right.
The obverse captures the natural beauty of a scallop shell in sculpted silver. Background information
Saint James the Greater was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Christian tradition identifies Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia in northwestern Spain, as his burial place.
