Coin description
The reverse portrays a woman with flowing dark hair, red roses and elaborate gold coloured jewellery, extending a wineglass towards the viewer. Her crimson outfit stands against a dark sky illuminated by a red moon. A coiled red serpent, scattered petals and an ornate masquerade mask surround her, creating an atmosphere of temptation. The inscription “Lust” appears at the bottom. A silver border combines flowing line patterns with symbolic motifs, including a crown, heart, skull, animals and scales.
The obverse features the Public Seal of Niue at the centre of a polished proof field, enclosed by a delicate beaded circle. An elaborate border of baroque foliage and curling scrollwork surrounds the central design. At the top, a small cherub combines a batlike wing with a feathered wing, echoing the theme of opposing qualities. The words “VICES”, “AND” and “VIRTUES” are integrated into the ornamentation. “NIUE ISLAND”, the year “2026”, the denomination of 2 Dollars, and the silver weight and fineness complete the design.
Background information
The seven deadly sins developed within Christian moral teaching as a way of describing destructive habits and human weaknesses. Pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth were contrasted with virtues intended to guide conduct and encourage spiritual growth. Throughout medieval and Renaissance art and literature, sins and virtues were frequently personified as human figures. Their gestures, clothing and symbolic attributes made abstract ideas about temptation and moral choice immediately recognisable.
Lust and chastity are traditionally presented as opposing responses to desire. In Christian moral teaching, lust concerns sexual desire pursued without moral restraint, while chastity emphasises discipline and integrity in the expression of sexuality. Chastity encompasses fidelity within marriage as well as abstinence in other circumstances. Their opposition has inspired centuries of allegorical art exploring temptation, commitment and the choices that shape human conduct.
