Coin description
Each reverse features a full colour reproduction of a celebrated religious painting representing one of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. An elaborate silver border of scrolling foliage surrounds the artwork like a miniature picture frame, creating the impression of a gallery in precious metal. Landscape and portrait formats accommodate the different compositions, while the matching ornamental frames give all fourteen coins a unified appearance.
Two coordinated obverse layouts accommodate the landscape and portrait formats. Both feature the Coat of Arms of Ghana on a reflective field, surrounded by fourteen miniature framed scenes representing the complete Stations of the Cross. Roman numerals identify each station, with the relevant station number and its accompanying scene marked in gold color. This distinctive detail identifies each coin’s place within the collection. An ornate border surrounds the design, completed by the inscriptions “STATIONS OF THE CROSS,” “REPUBLIC OF GHANA,” “2026,” “1 OZ .999 FINE SILVER,” “FIVE CEDIS” and “VIÆ CRUCIS.”

#4 – Jesus Meets His Mother (Christ Bearing the Cross by Murillo) Along the road to Calvary, Jesus meets His mother Mary. Their sorrowful exchange reflects deep love, grief, and compassion during His suffering.
#5 – Simon of Cyrene Helps Carry the Cross (Christ Carrying the Cross by Titian) Unable to continue alone, Jesus receives help from Simon of Cyrene, who is ordered to carry the cross beside Him. The moment symbolizes shared burden and human compassion.
#6 – Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus (St Veronica with Veil by M. Preti) Moved by mercy, Veronica steps forward to wipe the face of Jesus. Tradition says His image was left upon the cloth as a sign of His suffering.
#7 – Jesus Falls the Second Time (Jesus Falls by Veronese) As the journey grows more difficult, Jesus falls again beneath the weight of the cross. His repeated struggle reveals the physical agony endured on the road to Calvary.

Background information
The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis, is a Christian devotion recalling fourteen episodes in the Passion of Jesus, from his condemnation to death to his burial. The traditional sequence combines events described in the Gospels with episodes preserved through devotional tradition. Each station provides a focus for prayer and reflection on suffering, compassion, sacrifice and faith.
The practice grew from pilgrimages to Jerusalem, where Christians visited places associated with Jesus’ final journey. As the devotion developed, local representations allowed those unable to travel to the Holy Land to undertake a spiritual pilgrimage within their own communities. The Stations became widely established in churches and other devotional settings. They may be observed throughout the year and are especially associated with Lent and Good Friday.
